WMI Scan

A WMI scan allows you to discover all of your Windows based computers without needing to install the SysAid agent. Information collected includes computer name, hardware and software details, and more. You may later deploy the SysAid agent in order to take advantage of all agent functionalities, such as remote control, monitoring, broadcasts, initiating chat sessions, etc.

Important: In order for WMI scanning to detect your computers, the RPC service needs to be enabled on the computers you are scanning.

The WMI Scan list displays all of your saved WMI scans.

For general instructions for using list pages in SysAid, see Using SysAid Lists.

Create a new WMI scan

To create a new WMI scan, click .

Edit a WMI scan

Dear SysAid-Team

In case of rescan our asset informations (hard- and software) will not updated. There are still the same entries since the initial WMI-import!

Is this normal or how can we update this (we wouldn't use the agent on our clients)?

Thank's for a quick and fast answer

Hi Adrian,
Try running and inventory update - not a new scan - the scans job is to discover new devices.

So is a WMI scan supposed to automatically populate the asset list with new devices it finds? I've run it several times so far, and from the log it seems to find computers on the network just fine, but nothing appears in my asset list besides the five sample devices it started with.

Hi Kashalot,

Can copy-paste what appears in your WMI Scan log (you can remove the computer names) after the scan is complete?

Thanks,
Danny

Hi, Danny,

Absolutely - here's the log with computer and domain names redacted. We're on a firewalled network, so this is being run through my workstation with RDS; the process is using the account it created during setup, and the saved scan has the credentials for an admin account.

I'm not sure what's up with all the unavailable hosts on this run - this is the first time I've seen so many, before it's typically just been our servers due to a more restrictive configuration. But since this is the first scan where it's been an issue, I doubt it's related to the lack of asset updates.

Hi Kashalot,

After further checking, this appeared to be a problem on our side, sorry about that. It should now be fixed, can you check?

Thanks,
Danny

Now the log only gets as far as "Running WMI SCAN on **domain**" and doesn't go past that. I haven't changed anything in the configuration of the scan or the RDS workstation, so I'm not sure what's going on here.

Edit: However, I do see a number of our assets in the asset list now. Not sure if that's carried over from previous scans or if the current ones are populating the list without reflecting it in the log at run time.

Edit #2: The timestamps in the asset history all seem to be from the 14th and I haven't run the scan again until today, so it looks like this is related to whatever you fixed on the backend and not the new scans.

Hi Kashalot,

We've checked your RDS logs and it appears like your NetworkDiscovery.exe process is down. I suggest you restart your Remote Discovery Service on the RDS server and check if the problem is resolved - you should see the NetworkDiscovery.exe process in your process list.

Cheers,
Danny
